The incipit of the novel
It is a night of a black moon. A few minutes before one o’clock, a scream breaks the silence. A heart-wrenching voice that shakes the deepest sleep, the half-sleep, the thoughts of those who are awake. It is a voice mortally wounded, the last gasp, a sound now without words. A cry echoes it, then another. Lights, lamps, candles multiply against the night behind the windows, on balconies, and in front of doorways. From house to house, the rosy stone of the walls reflects the glimmers through the alleys, up to the church and the war memorial. An indistinct swarm of shadows chases the voices that overlap in broken words, labored breaths, and children’s cries.

The character of Luigi Mari aspires to become a literary detective of dark events in the early years of republican Italy.
Delightful novel-truth draws its narrative strength from the invention of Colonel Mari, a heroic figure of liberal anti-fascism, who will shed light on a mystery that has lasted for far too long.
