The story begins here...

Rain drenched the ribbon of asphalt of the Regina Road as Arno observed with satisfaction the job well-done. A tree trunk lay askew between the escarpment above and the parapet overhanging the lake below to prevent vehicles from passing in either direction: an insurmountable obstacle. The frosty air of a tentative spring stung his fingers gripping the machine gun he held pointed toward the centerline of the road. It was impossible to predict how long he would have to wait, and none of his fellow partisans scattered in the area knew either. Not even Brigadier Buffelli had been precise when he ordered the roadblock to be set up. Ever since Mussolini abandoned Milan on the evening of April 25th, all kinds of information had spread, much of it conflicting, some of it far-fetched.
