The story begins here...
On a moonless night, a few minutes before one o’clock, a scream shatters the silence. A tortured voice upsets deep sleep, half-sleep, the thoughts of those who don’t sleep. It is the voice of the mortally wounded, the final death rattle, a sound without words. A shout echoes, and then another. Lamps, lanterns, candles multiply against the darkness beyond the windowpanes, on balconies, and in front of doorways. Among the houses, walls of pink stone reflect the glow into alleyways, as far up as the church and the monument to fallen soldiers. An indistinct flurry of shadows chases the voices that overlap in slurred words, labored breaths, and children’s cries.
